Lissajous Trilogy 234

There was 123, so here is 234!

When you create an axonometric drawing, the two-dimensional projections are lying flat in the drawing plane. But you do not see how the projection would work in three-dimensional space.

In 234 I am attempting to add this additional view: Show both the projections as I need them for the construction, as well as how the two-dimensional pictures would live in three-dimensional space:

I wonder if these kinds of drawings are seen as “useless” as doing long division by hand. Error-prone, much slower than a machine.

As far as I know, AI cannot yet create mathematically precise drawings. But AI tools are already available that can break down a task into several steps, can outsource them to specialized tools. It may be able soon to delegate mathematics: An AI bot would create code that does the actual math.

I can imagine that it will be possible to ask AI to create the 3D image shown above, based on a description as vague as mine was above. Maybe it will create threejs code to created images like most of my code-generated art. In a second step this “computer image” could be converted to something looking like a pencil drawing. Months ago, you could already ask Microsoft Designer to create a dinosaur in the style of an antique patent drawings. The numbers and annotations were garbage, but the image look rather good.

Every time a task once done by a skilled human has been automated, it gets devalued because “a computer can do it”. It does not matter if the task would take enormous human skills, or a brain wired in a particular way. Savants being able to manipulate large numbers in their head are considered an oddity. Because the simplest electronic calculator can do it.

But at least there was an agreement that multiplying large number is a tedious task for the majority of humans, and it makes sense to let machines do it. However, today we automate away creative tasks that most(?) people would consider enjoyable. There were numerous memes and viral tweets along the lines of: Humans doing the tedious manual work while machines write poetry has not been the future I hoped for.

This is not a well-researched treatise on AI or a deep argument. But my theory is that we control what we can control, and we automate what we can automate easily – and what nerds have fun with automating. It’s hilarious to notice how seemingly simple tasks as managing addresses of locations or changes of legal names still wreak havoc in brittle IT systems of old (Just check what happens when your place changes its ZIP code. You changed the primary key – you’re doomed!). I am pretty sure somebody thinks that AI would solve that all. It is just funny that the lighthouse AI projects featured in the media always deal with nice-to-have things that nobody asked for while things that have been broken forever remain untouched.

Whatever – I will keep creating geometric art inspired by physics at a glacial pace! I will pass reverse Turing tests! An act of defiance.

I cannot resist asking WordPress AI assitant for feedback. It thinks I am highlighting the humorous aspects of IT system challenges. But also: It would be beneficial to incorporate more concrete examples or case studies to support the observations. Nope – you do not need to trust me on anything AI-related, but you need to believe a dinosaur that had seen many IT system challenges that were humorous in an unintended way.
