In the old days, my digital artworks were numbered:
Reality and Imagination #0 to #12.
Then I started Atoll of Diffraction and immediately christened each artwork, giving it a title like Peek through the Peaks. It added another interesting step to the creative process!
So, I needed to make Reality and Imagination complete as well!
After the thrill of physics, math, and code has cooled off, I look at the images again. I am searching for far-fetched connections and associations. Maybe I want to attach clichéd labels. Or both.
Reality and Imagination is really - from a mathematical perspective – about those two terms: Real and imaginary part of complex function 1/z. One possible physics interpretation: They are electrical field and potential of a dipole in a two-dimensional world. A text-book example for holomorphic functions. The first intrusion of complex analysis into the theoretical physics curriculum.
What am I actually seeing? Towers in space. Ethereal, yet strong. Regular, if looked at from the right angle. Surprisingly twisted and contorted, if seen from another viewpoint. A life-less space probe or robotic creatures.
All of that is floating in free space. I need to – again – to refer to Carl Sagan’s Cosmos and Vangelis’ ethereal music. Grandeur bordering on the lofty and the hackneyed.
I started to compile lists of potential names, brainstorming in public (on my tumblr site). A few images into the series, I am running out of ideas.
I need an interactive session to bounce off ideas! I had a hard time co-operating on poetry once with ChatGPT, because I found its output quite clichéd. But this is exactly what I need now!

Voice from the Future, sort of: I’ve had this post sitting in my Drafts for a few weeks, and when I started it I was on the wait list for GPT 4.0, and I did not know that GPT 4.0 powers Bing Chat – and that you have a real dialogue with Bing. So, I started chatting with ChatGPT 3.5 on the OpenAI site.
Another Voice from the Future, July 2024: I was undergoing some sort of reverse Turing test – somebody was suspicious that my visual art had been created with AI. So, an AI statement is needed in posts like this: While I have been playing with ChatGPT and text output in poetic experiments and here – to suggest names for artworks – I had never used AI for image generation. I had also never used AI to help me with my blogging. All weird errors and hallucinations here are mine and mine alone. Whenever I have tested AI bots for creative experiments with text, this is clearly indicated in my blog posts. My Reality and Imagination art was created with my javascript code, using the open source framework threejs.
Next Voice from the Future, September 2024: I am writing a blog post on an artwork whose name I came up with myself (as usual – except from this experiment). Searching raw material for found poetry, I notice that there is an ornamental product out there with nearly the same name. I am glad I have never repeated the chatbots-help-me-with-names experiments, and that I did not use the names “invented” by ChatGPT when presenting these artworks elsewhere.
August 2026: Just for completeness: I never ever use AI help in writing my own sentences. Only in a few blog posts, I tested ChatGPT for creating raw material for poetry or similar experiments. In these cases, the use of AI is described in detail.

ChatGPT 3.5 cannot see my art, so I need to describe it to them. That act alone lets my creative juices flow. Hear me talking to a chat bot!
Voice from the immediate future (having completed the post): It seems that the AI that WordPress uses for their AI Assistant cannot see either! This post contains the thirteen images, but it tells me : “Additionally, the author could include links or references to the artworks mentioned in the conversation, allowing readers to visualize the pieces while reading.“

(Voice from the future, 2026: Yes, I was this naive!)
I hope, this help with naming does this turn my honestly calculated and coded art into “AI Art”?I wrote all the code myself that control every pixel of these images. It is still an iterative process, and certain aspects feel like drawing with a physical pen.
But I had ChatGPT explain concepts in graphics programming and threejs to me. This is more enjoyable than googling – at least for now, when conversations with the bots removing all the ads and cookie banners from articles.
In the future, the slope will only get more slippery! Will there be any standard software that is not in some way AI-powered?
I guess, in the not-so-distant future you can feed an AI one of my images here (in low resolution) plus a vague description – something about real and imaginary parts, something something complex, fields, potentials whatever – plus “make it look like metal tubes” … and it gives you the javascript source code plus a browser image with the image to play with, plus a set of images. Or any programming language. Or you could ask the AI to generate a series of distinct images, and upload it to print-on-demand platforms! And claim a trademark. And automatically search for similar images on the internet and sue the creators. Or time-travel to the past, the create the images, then sue in the future. (I think this has been Douglas Adams’ idea, used somewhere in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. He was a wise man anticipating so many things!)
I am not sure how I feel about that, and WordPress’ AI Assistant scolds me “The conclusion could be condensed to maintain focus on the main content and avoid going off on tangents.”
