I’ve chosen them as my hosting provider a long time ago – because I have forever been impressed by their stellar service and their commitment to an open democratic web. They are a US company with remote employees from all over the world, and they take GDPR seriously.
Automattic operates data centers around the world. Text and images on this websites will be served from different locations to optimize performance. Their servers use names like *.wp.com or *.wordpress.com.
Users’ personal data: Visits and Comments
If you comment on this site, you do not need to sign up for a wordpress account. You need to provide an e-mail address and a user name, but you can tailor them to your liking.
When you visit this site, your IP address is logged for security reasons. In most cases your IP address cannot really be associated with you as a person as the IP address is dynamically assigned or your device is located behind a firewall together with other users’ devices.
Your IP address is only visible to wordpress.com’ technical staff. I don’t have access to technical server logs and IP addresses of viewers. I only see aggregate statistics with information about e.g. viewers per day, but I cannot identify individual users.
Only when you leave a comment, I will will be able to view your IP address together with the e-mail address you provided. However, I don’t ‘process’ or export these data; they are just shown to me in the WP admin console. If you wish to delete a comment together with these data visible to me, please contact me at elkement [at] outlook [dot] (or leave another comment, and I’ll then delete all comments incl. this one).

Signing up via e-mail will also create an account on the wordpress.com platform; you logon to this account via links sent to your e-mail address, and you can configure a password etc. If you unfollow elkement.art again (and you don’t follow other bloggers here), you would also need to delete this account if you want to undo all the things configured for wordpress.com.

WordPress, Gravatar, and tracking in general
In order to improve my visitors’ experience and security, I am on a paid plan to remove ads.
WP / Automattic may track WP users cross different WP sites by using scripts or cookies related to WP or Gravatar. For details see the WordPress.com Cookie Policy. The WP platform and Automattic also uses scripts hosted on or cookies related to [name].wordpress.com, [name].wp.com, and [name].gravatar.com.
Gravatar is a platform used to display icons associated with WordPress users and their e-mail addresses. It creates an icon for non-Wordpress commentators – from a hash of the e-mail address they enter. As I said before, you do not need to enter your true e-mail address to comment!
No Google fonts, no Analytics
wordpress.com websites like this one use Google Fonts, but those are served from WordPress’ own datacenters, not from Google’s.
I could use Google analytics here, but I chose not to! I am also not using any other plugin or tool that gives me enhanced information on visitors’ usage of my site. I only see aggregated statistics of viewers per day.
